PINKtober:  MERF and KMU Unite for Breast Cancer Awareness

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to honor those affected by breast cancer and reinforce our commitment to equitable access to care. In line with the theme of this year “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters”, a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar was organized by MERF, in collaboration with Khyber Medical University (KMU) at KMU Auditorium, Peshawar.

The event brought together Community Outreach Workers, Lady Health Workers, community influencers, hospital staff, faculty and students from KMU, MERF team working on the Gates Foundation–funded project, and representatives from partner organizations and the Gates Foundation.

The program featured presentations by MERF, KMU, and Dr. Arooj (Women Health Awareness Lead) from Shifa International Hospital, followed by a panel discussion with medical and public health experts leading breast cancer screening efforts. A poster competition among BS Public Health students added a creative touch to the awareness activities.

A highlight of the event was the inspiring story of a MERF staff member and breast cancer survivor who was screened and referred at Nishtarabad Hospital Peshawar. She was presented with a Hope Kit in recognition of her strength.

Chief guests Capt (R) Kamran Ahmad Afridi, Secretary Higher Education Department, and Prof. Dr. Zia-ul-Haq, Vice Chancellor KMU, commended MERF and KMU for their efforts and emphasized the importance of scaling up awareness and early detection. Shields were presented to distinguished guests and competition winners.

MERF remains committed to strengthening breast cancer awareness, screening, and care — ensuring that every journey is acknowledged and supported.
