DHQ Hospital Wana Emerges as a Center of Excellence in Combating Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in South Waziristan

DHQ Hospital Wana has emerged as a strong center of excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in South Waziristan Lower. In a region where access to specialized healthcare has long been a challenge, the hospital significantly strengthened its clinical response and provided timely, life-changing care to affected communities.

Under the specialist leadership of Dermatologist Dr. Muhammad Bilal, a fully functional Leishmaniasis treatment facility has been established at the hospital. 259 cases have been diagnosed and treated so far, with 109 patients achieving complete recovery. The facility has served patients from all tehsils of the district, significantly reducing the need for long-distance referrals and improving access to specialized care within the district.

The treatment facility has been providing comprehensive care including accurate diagnostic support, aseptic dressing services, and intralesional and intramuscular injection therapy under specialist supervision. Patients received continuous follow-up from initial diagnosis through recovery, ensuring consistent and standardized treatment outcomes.

The results have shown a steady increase in case detection and treatment uptake over time, reflecting growing community trust in the facility and improved outreach efforts across the district. Importantly, previously undiagnosed cases have been identified and brought into treatment, helping to interrupt ongoing transmission within communities.

Beyond clinical achievements, the initiative has significantly improved healthcare access for remote populations by reducing barriers related to distance, cost, and delayed diagnosis. The establishment of district-level specialist care has strengthened the local health system and provided a sustainable model for improved disease management. A key example of this impact is the case of a patient, Din Panah, who suffered for seven years without a correct diagnosis despite multiple consultations and procedures. Upon her arrival at DHQ Hospital Wana on 27 April 2026, she was accurately diagnosed for the first time and immediately placed on a structured treatment plan. Her condition, once mismanaged for years, finally received appropriate clinical attention, highlighting the critical importance of timely diagnosis and properly equipped healthcare facilities.

This success reflects what can be achieved when clinical expertise, structured systems, and community trust come together. With 259 patients treated and a growing number of recoveries, DHQ Hospital Wana has established itself as a key center for Leishmaniasis management in South Waziristan, demonstrating the potential of district-level healthcare to deliver high-quality specialized services in underserved regions.
