Timely Referral Saved a Child from Future Disability at MERF-Supported Civil Dispensary in Peshawar
Sometimes, a mother notices small changes that others may overlook. In this case, a caring mother became worried when she saw that her 2.5-year-old son Ahmad Ali’s gait was not normal and seemed to be changing gradually over time.
Although the child was otherwise active, healthy, and had received all routine vaccinations on time, the mother noticed that both legs appeared curved outward while walking and standing. Concerned about the child’s future mobility, she brought the child for medical evaluation.
During examination, the healthcare team at Government Civil Dispensary Akhoonabad, led by Medical Officer Dr. Shandana Malik, observed that the child’s legs were bending outward from the knees, commonly known as “bow legs”. The child had no pain, fever, injury, or weakness, but the change in walking pattern was becoming more noticeable. After assessment, Dr Shandana explained to the child’s mother that some degree of leg bowing can be normal in younger children and may improve naturally with growth. However, when the bending becomes more pronounced or continues to worsen, it is important to investigate further to rule out conditions related to bone growth and nutrition.
The mother was counseled carefully, and the child was referred to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar for detailed evaluation. Dr. Shandana further emphasized that early diagnosis is extremely important because untreated bone problems in children can lead to difficulty walking, long-term deformity, and growth complications later in life.
Due to the mother’s attentiveness and timely medical consultation, her child is now on the path toward proper diagnosis and treatment before permanent complications develop.
“I am fully satisfied with the care provided at this Civil Dispensary,” said the mother. “The staff examined my baby carefully, guided me properly, and explained everything clearly. Their timely referral and support saved my son from a life-long disability.”
MERF is successfully managing 15 civil dispensaries in Super High-Risk Union Councils (SHRUCs) in Peshawar district, with support from Gates Foundation, to support polio eradication through the delivery of integrated healthcare services.
